Fontana, CA (December 11th, 2021) – According to the Fontana Police Department, a traffic accident that occurred on December 10th in Fontana resulted in the death of a woman. Five other people suffered injuries in the accident.
Shortly after 9:00 p.m., police officers responded to an accident that happened near the intersection of San Sevaine Rd. and Baseline Ave. in the northern region of Fontana.
Based on reports, an Infiniti Q50 was traveling at a high rate of speed on Baseline Ave. when it collided with a Volkswagen Jetta that was heading northbound on San Sevaine Rd. A public information officer from Fontana reportedly was proceeding on a green light when the accident occurred.
The five vehicle occupants traveling in the Infinity sustained moderate injuries. They were rushed to local area hospitals for treatment.
According to the Fontana Police Department, it is unclear whether drugs and/or alcohol played a role in the cause of the accident. Pending investigations, Baseline Ave. was closed for roughly six hours.
In California, speeding is one of the most common causes of fatal traffic accidents. The reckless action is not only considered aggressive, it has been deemed as particularly destructive.
Drivers may choose to speed for a wide range of reasons, but overall, it is a conscious decision drivers make in an attempt to arrive on time. When feeling pressured to arrive on time, many drivers fail to realize that speeding will make little to no difference on their time of arrival.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding simply is not worth it as it endangers all those who are on the road. Based on a survey published by the agency, just over 9,400 people lost their lives in accidents involving speeding in 2019. Many other studies indicate that with an increase in vehicle speeds, the increase in serious to fatal injuries also increases.
Aside from speeding alone, there is a strong correlation in drivers who speed and engage in other law-breaking behaviors, such as operating the vehicle while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Motorists who speed while also impaired by a substance run a greater risk of losing control of the vehicle. These imparied motorists can have great difficulty in reacting quickly to a change on the road or an unexpected emergency. Due to the dangers of speeding, many people advocate legislation that would make speeding charges just as severe as DUI charges, since the effects of both actions often have similar catastrophic consequences.
Motorists who operate their vehicles in an aggressive or reckless manner not only put their lives at risk but the lives of innocent bystanders as well. Innocent people should never have to suffer as a consequence of another’s reckless actions, nevertheless, thousands of innocent people are at risk of serious injury or even death over reckless and completely avoidable actions such as speeding.
Drivers who operate their vehicles in a reckless manner should always be held accountable for the injuries and damages they cause. Under California law, these drivers can be held criminally accountable for their actions, but injured parties can also seek monetary damages from the defendant through civil action. By filing a wrongful death lawsuit, families of those fatally wounded can also seek monetary reparations from accountable parties.
If you or someone you know has been harmed in a traffic accident caused by a reckless driver, the at-fault driver can be held liable for the damages and losses incurred from the accident. Compensatory damages can be obtained from the reckless driver, which include tangible losses, such as hospital bills, a loss of wages, and property damage. A damages award can also include intangible losses, such as a loss of quality of life and emotional distress.
