Pedestrian Fatally Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident in San Bernardino, Suspect Has Been Arrested
San Bernardino, CA (December 28th, 2020) – On the evening of December 27th, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a midsize family sedan in a hit-and-run accident.
According to the San Bernardino Police Department, the accident occurred around 7:46 p.m. at the intersection of G Street and 2nd Street. The suspect who struck the victim fled the scene and did not wait for the police or emergency personnel to arrive.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 30-year-old Ronald Harris was driving at a high rate of speed in a Saturn Aura when the accident occurred. The suspect was approaching G Street, traveling west on 2nd St. when he came across a pedestrian crossing the street. The pedestrian was on the crosswalk when the suspect allegedly failed to yield and eventually struck the pedestrian while traveling at a high speed. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ronald Harris was later located by police officers. It is believed that he was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana at the time of the accident. Harris was arrested on charges of hit and run causing injury or death and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
The accident is still under police investigation and it is recommended that anyone with additional information contact the San Bernardino Police Department.
Although the State of California is not the only state with increasing pedestrian fatalities, it is the state with the highest reported pedestrian injuries and fatalities. California, along with five other states, makes up the majority of all pedestrian fatalities reported in the United States in the first half of 2019.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, pedestrian accidents rose 26 percent from 2014 to 2018, which is a rate higher than the national average. Although there are many reasons for the rise in pedestrian accidents, one of the most common reasons is negligence.
Undoubtedly, reckless driving is dangerous and when a person is driving recklessly, it poses a threat to all those who share the road with that driver. Unsafe driving can kill a person who is out for a run or walk. Reckless driving, such as speeding and aggressive driving can lead to catastrophic injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), when struck by a vehicle, pedestrians are most likely to be killed when the driver is speeding.
Another leading factor in causing pedestrian accidents is distracted driving, which is a major issue across the country. The NHTSA reports that in 2017, distracted driving led to 3,177 deaths. Distracted driving is described as anything that could divert a driver’s attention from the road ahead. This could involve talking to other passengers in the vehicle, using a phone, or changing radio stations.
Finally, driving while under the influence is another major cause of pedestrian accidents. The NHTSA reports that in 2016, close to 50 percent of all pedestrian accidents involved an intoxicated pedestrian and/or intoxicated driver. When a person is driving while intoxicated, he or she is more likely to drive at high speeds, disregard stop signs and stop lights, and drive erratically. Additionally, as a result of their impaired vision, intoxicated drivers are not likely to see pedestrians on the road.
Pedestrians who are injured on the road as a result of another’s negligence have a legal right to pursue monetary compensation from the at-fault driver. Pedestrian injuries are almost always severe and they can be life-changing. As a result, it is important to seek the legal guidance and support of a skilled personal injury attorney who will work tirelessly to ensure the negligent driver is held accountable.
If you or someone you love was injured while walking or jogging on the street, filing a personal injury claim can help you obtain the compensation that could pay for past and future medical expenses, a loss of income, disability, and even a loss of quality of life. Filing a personal injury claim after a pedestrian accident, however, can be challenging. Consider obtaining the support of an attorney you can depend on during this difficult time.
