There are many challenges and dangers motorcyclists face when out on the road. Unfortunately, most motorcycle accidents have devastating consequences. Although not all motorcycle accidents will have deadly consequences, most result in very serious injuries that lead to a lifetime of pain and emotional turmoil.
According to some reports, the single most dangerous situation for riders happens when other vehicles are making left-hand turns. These types of accidents account for almost half of all motorcycle accidents. For the most part, turning cars collide with riders when the rider is passing the car, going straight on an intersection, or is trying to overtake the car. While these accidents are also common among regular passenger vehicles, these accidents are particularly dangerous for motorcyclists as a result of their small frames. Motorcycles can sometimes be hard to see and this makes riders vulnerable to left-turn accidents.
In the State of California, lane splitting is legal and unfortunately, this can oftentimes place the lives of riders at risk of a serious traffic accident. Lane splitting happens when a rider travels between two lanes of stopped or slowly moving vehicles, which usually happens during rush hour. Lane splitting can be a common cause of motorcycle accidents because of the reduced space riders have to maneuver. It is also dangerous as a result of the close proximity riders have to the vehicles they are passing. Additionally, most drivers fail to check for passing motorcycles when switching lanes.
Another common cause of motorcycle accidents are roadway hazards. Riders face a higher sense of risk in roadway hazards than most vehicles on the road because of their smaller size and because of their unstable nature. Any slick pavement conditions, potholes, uneven pavement, and surrounding infrastructure can pose a serious threat to the safety of motorcyclists. Since riders are far smaller than most vehicles, they may be unseen when there are street signs or greenery blocking them from view.
Motorcycle accidents involving injuries are serious and they demand immediate action. Even when an injury is not immediately visible after an accident, it is likely that the injury will develop in time. Because of this, it is incredibly important to obtain a full medical evaluation after the accident and seek the support of a skilled personal injury attorney.
