He answered the calls. He handled discovery. He worked the cases. And because there were few layers between attorney and client, he came to know both exceptionally well.

A decade later, the practice looks considerably different. Justin now works alongside his brothers, Jonathan L. King and Oliver P. King, at the firm’s Rancho Cucamonga office. “I want to grow; I want to serve more people,” he said during an interview marking the firm’s 10th anniversary. “However, I never want to lose that personal touch.”

From a One-Room Office to a Three-Attorney Personal Injury Firm

Justin did not start his own practice because he lacked exposure to significant cases.

Before opening The Law Offices of Justin H. King, he spent three years working for attorney William Shapiro, whom he describes as one of his most important professional mentors. Justin remembers working on catastrophic-injury matters with potential values routinely reaching seven and eight figures, while learning how sophisticated plaintiff cases were investigated, developed and prepared.

Professionally, it was an enviable place to be. But one day, Justin remembers sitting in the office and realizing that the size of a case was not the same thing as having responsibility for it.

He found himself thinking that he would rather handle a smaller case in which he could make the strategic decisions himself than participate in a much larger case without the same control over how it was prepared.

“I felt like I was a great lawyer who was ready to do the cases on my own,” he recalled. “So I went ahead and made the leap.”

The decision also brought together several different chapters of his early career. Justin had begun his career in 2010 in plaintiff-side class-action litigation before moving into insurance defense, where he represented defendants in personal-injury matters. He then returned to the plaintiff’s side under Shapiro in 2013 before opening his own practice in Rancho Cucamonga in 2016. One of Justin King’s Earliest Clients Came After a Meeting at a McDonald’s

One of the stories Justin remembers most vividly from the firm’s first weeks does not involve a multimillion-dollar case.

Justin’s first son was born in September 2016, roughly one month after the firm opened. Justin and his wife were living in Hermosa Beach at the time while she completed her medical residency.

The day after their son was born, Justin remembers leaving the hospital and driving east to Upland to meet a prospective client at a McDonald’s. The person had been involved in what Justin recalls as a relatively minor rear-end collision.

His wife thought he was crazy to leave. Justin saw the situation differently. He had just started a law firm and did not believe he had earned the luxury of deciding that a case was too ordinary for his attention.

“I was out on my own and I had to hustle,” he said. “I felt like I had to do everything I could to ensure that my new endeavor was successful.”

Ten years later, car and other motor-vehicle accidents remain an important part of the firm’s personal-injury practice. That emphasis also reflects a significant local need. California Office of Traffic Safety data shows that 506 people were killed or injured in traffic collisions in Rancho Cucamonga in 2023, including 29 motorcyclists, 33 pedestrians and 25 bicyclists.

Some vehicle cases involve devastating injuries, commercial defendants or disputed liability. Others begin with a collision that appears comparatively straightforward. Either way, an injured person’s legal position can eventually turn on issues such as fault, medical causation, insurance coverage, pre-existing conditions, future care and whether an insurer accepts the full significance of the injury.

For Justin, that work traces back almost to the moment the firm’s doors opened.

A Catastrophic Injury Case That Made the Work Personal

Shortly after his son’s birth, a very different case came into the new firm. Justin describes it as his first major case after opening the practice: a matter involving a young boy who had suffered a life-altering brain injury during birth.

The timing affected him in a way he had not expected. The injured child was approximately the same age as his own newborn son.

Justin remembers thinking about how fortunate his family had been and becoming deeply invested in understanding what the other family was facing. He worked on the case for roughly three years and estimates that he visited the family’s home more than 30 times.

“We became very close,” he said. “There was this connection between me and their son that I don’t know I would have been capable of fostering before I had a son of my own.”

The experience shaped how he understands catastrophic injuries more broadly. A serious injury case is not simply a collection of records, expert opinions and financial losses. It is also the story of how an injury changes a person’s independence, family relationships, work, routines and future.

That lesson continues to matter in the traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, severe motor-vehicle and wrongful-death cases the firm handles today.

What Representing Insurance Companies Taught Justin King About Injury Claims

Many personal-injury firms say they understand insurance companies. Justin’s career gives that statement a more specific foundation.

Before dedicating his practice to injured plaintiffs, he spent several years representing defendants in personal-injury litigation. Super Lawyers reports that Justin defended numerous personal-injury cases through trial during his insurance-defense career.

Seeing claims from the defense side changed the way he later approached them for plaintiffs.

In an interview for this article, Justin described the flow of information he observed between defense attorneys and insurance carriers. Adjusters evaluating litigated claims often receive much of their understanding of a case through defense counsel’s reports and analysis. Early in litigation, those reports naturally focus on potential defenses, disputed causation, liability arguments and ways to reduce exposure. As depositions are completed, experts become involved, evidence is tested and trial approaches, the strengths and weaknesses of those positions may become clearer.

Justin says he saw situations in which that process materially changed the insurer’s evaluation of a claim.

That does not mean every insurance company handles claims identically or that every case should be litigated. It does help explain why Justin believes an early insurance-company valuation should not automatically be treated as a final assessment of what a serious injury case is worth.

In a car-accident claim, for example, important evidence may still need to be developed concerning fault, the relationship between the collision and an injury, future treatment, lost earning capacity, aggravated pre-existing conditions or the long-term effect of an injury on daily life.

Justin has spent years seeing those arguments from both sides.

The firm’s experience with automobile insurance now extends beyond individual injury claims as well. In the published 2025 California Court of Appeal decision Cobos v. National General Insurance Co., The Law Offices of Justin H. King and Justin H. King are identified as counsel for plaintiffs in litigation alleging that automobile insurers improperly denied accident claims and rescinded policies. The proposed class consisted of over 4,000 insureds. The Court of Appeal reversed an order denying class certification and directed the trial court to certify, at minimum, a liability-only class; the appellate ruling concerned certification rather than a final determination of the underlying allegations.

For a lawyer who once represented the insurance side of personal-injury litigation, that progression is notable.

As the firm expanded, it grew in an unusual direction: Justin’s brothers came home.

Oliver joined the practice first, followed by Jonathan. By 2022, all three brothers were working together in Rancho Cucamonga. The firm’s publicly documented results include a $3.25 million settlement arising from a rear-end collision in which a California State University police vehicle struck the client’s car, sending it across traffic and into a ravine. In the early years of the firm, Justin remembers facing a decision about retaining an expensive expert for a case approaching trial. The firm was still young, and the expense was significant — to the point of nearly exhausting critical reserve funds. He authorized it anyway.

“You have to trust in the work you put into your cases,” he said. “You have to trust your instincts, put any nerves you have to the side, and do what is good for the case and the client.”

That experience helped shape the way he thinks about contingency-fee litigation. Significant personal-injury matters may require experts, investigation, depositions, accident reconstruction, medical analysis and other expenditures long before a case produces any recovery. Preparing for trial therefore requires more than confidence; it can require a willingness to commit resources before the outcome is known.

Another formative case tested the firm’s resolve in a different way.

Justin describes an extremely difficult trial in which the defense had made no settlement offer. During trial, an important expert performed poorly on the witness stand and other developments caused Justin to worry that the case might be moving in the wrong direction.

The team kept trying it.

The jury eventually returned an 11–1 plaintiff verdict. Super Lawyers independently records Justin’s subsequent nomination for Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Consumer Attorneys of the Inland Empire in connection with that verdict.

Justin says that trial left him with a lesson applicable to every form of serious litigation: a lawyer’s commitment to a client cannot disappear simply because the case becomes harder than expected.

His courtroom history also includes a wrongful-death matter involving the City of Redlands. The case arose after a vehicle struck an old masonry water-weir structure located beside a roadway. Justin represented the surviving husband. A jury returned a $2 million verdict and apportioned 60 percent of fault to the city; Super Lawyers reports that the structure was removed shortly after the case.

Justin remembers the result for a reason extending beyond the verdict itself.

“When your work helps make the world safer for others,” he said, “there is a tremendous amount of satisfaction in that.”

A Century of Inland Empire Legal Roots

The Law Offices of Justin H. King is celebrating 10 years, but the King family’s connection to Rancho Cucamonga stretches far beyond the firm’s founding.

According to the Riverside Lawyer history of the family, relatives on John Lewis King’s mother’s side moved to Rancho Cucamonga in the late 1800s and purchased land for citrus farming. John Lewis King was born in 1909, grew up on the family citrus ranch, attended USC law school and began his legal career with the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office before entering private practice.

In 1953, he became the first attorney from San Bernardino County inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers. His career ended tragically in 1967, when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while delivering a closing argument in court and died the following day.

Justin never met his grandfather, but the stories about him became part of the family’s understanding of what it meant to practice law.

One story held that John Lewis King could become so absorbed thinking about his cases while driving home that he would miss the exits for Rancho Cucamonga and continue toward Los Angeles.

There is also an old audio recording. Justin’s mentor obtained a recording of John Lewis King participating in a mock trial, and Justin says he still listens to it from time to time. The Riverside Lawyer profile independently documents the recording and Justin’s admiration for the way his grandfather worked with difficult facts.

The law continued through the next generation. Justin’s mother, Pamela King, worked as a prosecutor, civil attorney and public defender before serving as a San Bernardino County Superior Court judge. His father, Jeffrey King, practiced law before becoming a judge and later serving on the California Court of Appeal.

After John Lewis King’s death, members of the regional legal community established the John Lewis King Memorial Scholarship Fund. The San Bernardino County Bar Association reports that the fund was established in 1968 to assist law students from the Inland Empire and had awarded 106 scholarships by its 50th anniversary in 2018.

Today, Justin, Jonathan and Oliver are practicing together in the community their family has called home for generations.

That makes the firm’s 10th anniversary both a milestone of its own and the latest chapter in a much longer Inland Empire story for the family.
