Multi-vehicle accidents are usually defined by collisions that involve multiple vehicles. Oftentimes, these types of accidents are referred to as pile up accidents, especially when they involve more than three vehicles.
Multi-vehicle collisions happen frequently on highways, freeways, or other roads where many vehicles travel alongside one another at a high rate of speed. The high speeds usually involved when driving in these roads can make it very difficult for drivers to stop safely when approaching an accident. Consequently, multi-vehicle accidents can happen because drivers cannot stop on time.
Aside from high speeds, many multi-vehicle accidents can happen as a result of road conditions, such as low visibility, lack of lighting, fog, snow, rain, and even deteriorated roads. When road conditions are dangerous, motorists are expected to reduce their speed and remain careful and alert. Sadly, many motorists fail to adjust their driving or they fail to recognize the dangers and this can cause serious multi-vehicle accidents.
Determining fault in a multi-vehicle accident is understandably difficult. These accidents usually involve more than three parties, which means that they could potentially involve more than three at-fault parties. These cases are notoriously complex and it can even be difficult for insurance companies to establish liability. As a result, these accidents will usually end up in court to determine who caused the accident.
The State of California observes the pure comparative negligence law, meaning, every party involved in the accident may face responsibility for the accident, even when injured. Depending on the percentage found at fault, the plaintiff’s damages award will be reduced.
Unlike other states, injured victims may be able to recover compensation for their injuries even when found to be more than 50% at fault for the accident.
Multi-vehicle accidents can be life-changing experiences. Even when a victim survives the collision, the consequences can cause complete upheaval in his or her life. A few of the most common injuries sustained by those involved in multi-vehicle accidents include, but are not limited to whiplash, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, internal bleeding, and head trauma.
Depending on the extent of injuries, those who are fortunate to survive a multi-vehicle accident will usually face mounting medical expenses, a loss of employment, and other economic hardships. For this reason, it is important to seek compensatory damages that can help for these expenses.
