In the State of California, car accidents are one of the leading causes of injury, but these accidents do not always happen on the road.

Motor vehicles crash into homes and other buildings more often than we may think. According to a website, approximately 60 drivers crash into office buildings and retail stores everyday across the United States. Most of these accidents are caused by drunk, young, or elderly drivers who accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

There are many other reasons why these accidents can happen. Although pedal confusion is the most common, these accidents can also happen because of medical emergencies, police chases, and other traffic accidents.

When this type of car accident happens, the consequences can be disastrous. Unfortunately, many innocent people lose their lives in accidents involving a car crashing into a dwelling. Even when a person survives the accident, the injuries sustained can be life-changing.

A few of the most common injuries typically sustained in accidents involving a vehicle colliding into a building involve broken bones, burn injuries, crushed or even severed limbs, neck injuries, head trauma, spinal cord injuries, and cuts and lacerations.

Any of the aforementioned injuries can cause short-term and long-term debilitations. Depending on the extent of the injury, it is likely that the victim may become disabled, ultimately leading to time taken off work. For those who suffer severe injuries, returning to work may become impossible.

Enduring financial hardship following a serious injury caused by a car accident is a real probability. For this reason, it is very important to pursue a claim against the party who caused the accident for monetary compensation. Generally, these accidents are caused by the driver who crashed the vehicle into the home. In this scenario, the at-fault driver will be liable for the victim’s damages.

When a car crashes into a home and the driver is at fault for the accident, his or her driver’s insurance vehicle policy will pay for the damages caused. In California, drivers are legally required to carry a minimum amount of coverage. The victims’ damages should be paid for in full through the at-fault driver’s insurance policy.

In the event that the at-fault driver’s insurance coverage is not enough to cover the extent of damages, the injured person may need to file a claim with his or her own homeowner’s insurance. This will pay for the damages that exceed those covered by the driver’s auto insurance policy limits.

It is important to note that if the accident happened in a retail store or another type of private establishment, there may be other alternatives for receiving compensation.

If you or a loved one was hurt in an accident while inside a building where a vehicle crashed into it, it is important to take swift action and seek the legal support of a skilled personal injury attorney. A well-versed personal injury attorney who has experience in handling these types of cases will work hard to investigate the case, ensure all responsible parties are held accountable, and fight for full compensation.
